Brief Description of the Project	This project aims to make Akagera River navigable through the construction of canals, locks, river cut offs, river improvement works (removal of rocks, islands), and river bank protection. The entire project covers 260 km of river, from Lake Victoria to Kagitumba. River Akagera provides transport alternative that is crucial in facilitating regional trade between Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania, which will in turn enhance regional integration.
Objective and Rationale for the Project	To make Akagera River Navigable for river boats / vessels - By accessing Lake Victoria by the river, Rwanda will have access to both Mombasa and Dar Es Salaam ports through ports at Kisumu and Mwanza, and hinterland road or rail connections which will result into transport cost reduction
Location/Site	The Akagera River, also known as the Kagera River, or Alexandra Nile, is an East African river which begins in Burundi from Lake Rweru and flows east along the Rwanda-Burundi and Rwanda- Tanzania borders to a confluence with the Ruvubu River. From the confluence, the river flows north along the Rwanda-Tanzania border, over Rusumo Falls and through Akagera National Park. It then takes a turn to the east, following the Tanzania-Uganda border and emptying into Lake Victoria.

Existing or Planned Projects along the proposed project	The project serves an existing infrastructure asset of another sector, but there is less than 50% overlap in the geography serviced by the proposed project and the other sector existing asset.
Please provide more details for your choice above	There are two major corridors linking Rwanda to the Indian Ocena ports; the Central Corridor and the Northern Corridor. This project aims at complimenting these services by providing a multi-sectoral link (inland waterway transport) to cargo transport. Its hinterland is Burundi and DRC.
